Ómar Ingi commenced his remarkable career with his hometown team, Selfoss. At the age of 17, he made the move to Valur, Reykjavík, where he quickly secured a spot on the main team. In 2016 he signed with Aarhus in Denmark, and then two years later, he transferred to Aalborg.
In 2020, following a succesful time in Denmark, Ómar transferred to Germany, joining SC Magdeburg, where he has stayed since. During his time with Magdeburg, the team has won the the EHF European league in 2020/21 and the IFH Super Globe in 2021. Notably, Ómar was the top scorer of the German league in 2020/21, contributing 274 goals to the team.
Ómars talents have been recognized worldwide. He was named Iceland’s Athlete of the year in both 2021 and 2022. Moreover, he was voted MVP of the professional league in Germany for the 2021/22 season. Most recently, he was ranked as the fourth best handball player globally by specialists at TV2 in Norway.
Ómar Ingi has already had a very successful carrer at age 26. But how did it start? What drew you to the game? It's actually very simple, I decided to try it out and when I went to my first handball practice I was hooked.
Do you have a favorite place in Iceland? Personally, I would have to mention Selfoss, the town where I grew up.
Interestingly, 4 players on the Icelandic team come from Selfoss, a small town situated in the southern part of Iceland, boasting a population of approximately 10,000 people.
You have spent a lot of time in Germany, do you have a favorite place there? I do. I have been playing for SC Magdeburg since 2020 and I have to say that my favorite place is my home in Magdeburg.
Who is your favorite handball player of all time? I will go with a fellow Icelander, Ólafur Stefánsson.
Óli Stef, who is the former captain of the Icelandic national team, played 330 national games. Óli also played for SC Magdeburg during his handball career.
I listen to "Skímó" (Skítamórall). Skítamórall is an Icelandic band that was formed in Ómar's hometown, Selfoss.
