Elvar Örn is born and raised in Selfoss, a small town in the southern part of Iceland, located not far from Reykjavík.
His handball journey started at an early age, playing with his hometown team, Selfoss. Progressing through the junior ranks, he eventually joined the senior team, where he played a crucial role in their success in the Icelandic Premier League from 2018 to 2020. Elvar Örn's standout performances earned him the title of MVP in the Premier League in both 2018 and 2019.
In 2019, he made a move to Denmark to play with Skjern Håndbold, and later in 2021, he signed with MT Melsungen in Germany.
Elvar Örn made his debut with the Icelandic national team in 2018. Additionally, he contributed to the junior national team and helped secure the third place in the 2015 IHF Men's Youth (U19) World Championship.
A special mention goes to Elvar Örn's father, Jón Birgir Guðmundsson, who is the physiotherapist for the national team.
When we asked why Elvar started playing handball he revealed "because everyone was doing handball and football when I started".
Many players have specific pre-game routines, Elvar claims it's not a ritual "but I do always do the same warmup".
Elvar loves his hometown, so when we asked him about his favorite place in Iceland, he quickly said it had to be Selfoss.
As for his favorite player of all time? "Guðjón Valur".
It changes everytime but "Draumaland" by Sælan is always good. It's a Selfoss song.
